Is your beard making you look like a foxy lumberjack or just an old man?
According to 300 people polled by Crown Clinic, a hair transplant center in Manchester, England, keeping the bristly look seemingly ages you up to 10 years, while a mustache adds on five.
The Crown Clinic research team showed volunteers pictures of male celebrities without beards and asked them to guess each man’s age. The participants were then shown the same stars with facial hair ranging from mustaches to heavy beards.
And these aren’t unattractive people: Volunteers saw pictures of Brad Pitt, David Beckham and more good-looking actors and athletes.
Some male celebrities with stubble, including soccer manager Roy Keane, were thought to be as much as 10 years older than they really were. Clean shaven men were often mistaken for several years younger than their age.
David Beckham, for example, was labelled 35 — four years younger than he really is.
It’s all well and good for the George Clooneys of the world, those whose crinkly laugh lines and dazzling white teeth only grow more charming with age, but for the average man who’s beginning to show signs of age, 10 years makes an exponential difference.
Keep in mind, the hair transplant clinic may have a stake in these results. However, a man’s full, bushy beard does perform an undeniable trick on the eyes.
Maybe it’s time to go back to baby face…?
